MESSAGE FROM PROF. E. SMARANDA OLARINDE, THE VICE-CHANCELLOR, AFE BABALOLA UNIVERSITY, ADO-EKITI (ABUAD)
On the Occasion of 2025 World Radio Day
It is with delight that I join the global community in celebrating World Radio Day 2025, themed “Radio and Climate Change.” This annual occasion underscores the indispensable role of radio in informing, educating, and mobilizing communities—especially in tackling urgent global challenges such as climate change.
As one of the most defining issues of our time, climate change continues to affect and reshape societies, economies, nations and the very ecosystems worldwide. In our collective quest for a sustainable future, radio emerges as a powerful catalyst for awareness, advocacy, and action. Its unparalleled reach ensures that even the most remote and underserved populations gain access to information, especially on climate and its catastrophic damages due to global warming. The importance of radio towards fostering preparedness and resilience cannot be overemphasized.
“One, two, three, four. Is it snowing where you are, Mr. Thiessen?“-were words said to have been spoken by Canadian inventor Reginald Fessenden on December 23, 1900, as he addressed his assistant, Alfred Thiessen, who was stationed a mile away; marking a major breakthrough in wireless communication and highlighting the undeniable role of radio in climate observation and societal development, globally.
Across continents, radio stations have been pivotal in climate advocacy—delivering real-time weather alerts, promoting climate-smart agricultural practices, and amplifying the voices of scientists, policymakers, and local communities. This dynamic medium remains instrumental in cultivating environmental stewardship, enhancing resilience, and influencing policy reforms.
At Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD), we recognize the transformative power of communication in addressing ecological instability. Through rigorous research, strategic collaborations, and innovative approaches, we reaffirm our commitment to supporting radio’s role in enhancing climate literacy and empowering communities to take decisive action toward sustainability.
On this World Radio Day, I implore all broadcasters, journalists, researchers, and policymakers, to harness the full potential of radio in combating climate change. Let us leverage this platform to educate, inspire, and drive impactful change, paving the way for a greener, healthier and better future.
Happy 2025 World Radio Day!
