In a compelling address delivered at the pre-mobilization exercise for prospective corps members, the Vice-Chancellor of Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD), Prof. E. Smaranda Olarinde, FCArb, FCAI, underscored the values of patriotism, selflessness, and excellence as the university’s final-year students prepare to join the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme.
Addressing the prospective corps members at the Alfa Belgore Hall on Tuesday, Prof. Olarinde urged the students to uphold the spirit of ‘Afeism,’ a hallmark of excellence associated with the institution.
“As you move out of here, let the spirit of Afeism be your guide. We are known for excellence. Be a worthy ambassador as you head to camp and serve your dear country, Nigeria,” she emphasized.
The Vice-Chancellor’s stirring address was part of a broader event aimed at preparing ABUAD students for the NYSC scheme—a mandatory year-long service to the nation for Nigerian graduates. The session, attended by university officials and representatives of the NYSC Ekiti Directorate, featured informative and interactive segments.
The Registrar, Lady Christy Oluborode, described the exercise as a critical preparatory step to ensure that ABUAD students are well-equipped for a seamless transition into national service.
“The essence of the programme is to provide accurate, firsthand information about the mobilization process—highlighting registration requirements and procedures, explaining service year expectations, and creating an opportunity for direct interaction with NYSC officials,” she stated.
Leading the NYSC delegation, Dr. Abraham Oludolapo, urged the prospective corps members to be law-abiding and vigilant, emphasizing the importance of correct documentation and biometric capturing to avoid hitches during registration.
“For redeployment, concessions are granted on two grounds: health and marital status. For health-related cases, it must involve life-threatening conditions such as cancer or any severe disability, supported by a valid medical report from a recognized hospital,” he explained.
Dr. Oludolapo also reiterated the importance of adhering to the NYSC Bye-Laws, cautioning the students against embarking on night journeys during their service year for safety reasons.
The event, characterized by an engaging question-and-answer session, provided the prospective corps members with the opportunity to clarify their concerns, with NYSC representatives promptly addressing various inquiries.
The pre-mobilization exercise was lauded by attendees as a timely and impactful initiative aimed at adequately preparing the final-year students for the NYSC scheme, aligning with ABUAD’s commitment to fostering academic excellence and national service.
