Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD), has concluded arrangements for some students to undergo advanced hands-on industrial training in China as part of efforts to strengthen global exposure and practical competence.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. E. Smaranda Olarinde, FCArb, FCAI, disclosed this on Thursday, January 15, 2026, during the 2025/2026 Students’ Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) Orientation Programme, organised with the support of the Industrial Training Fund (ITF).
According to the Vice-Chancellor, 38 engineering students from the College of Engineering are scheduled to travel to Zhejiang Polytechnic University of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, China, in March 2026, for a month practical training. The students had earlier completed a two-month theoretical training in Intelligent Manufacturing Technology and Intelligent Control Technology under a collaborative programme between ABUAD and the Chinese institution.
“We are rounding off arrangements for 38 of our engineering students who will be travelling to China in March for their industrial attachment. Later in the year, some of our medical students will also proceed to China for hands-on training with the Cherami Group,” Prof. Olarinde stated.
She explained that the students would undergo intensive practical training under the guidance of top-notch international experts, adding that the initiative reflects ABUAD’s commitment to producing globally competitive graduates.
The Vice-Chancellor further noted that ABUAD maintains thriving academic and industrial collaborations with leading institutions across Africa, America, China, and Europe, stressing that the University remains deliberate in sustaining its status as a globally relevant institution.
She urged students to cultivate curiosity, ask constructive questions, and embrace continuous learning in order to remain ahead in their chosen careers.
Also speaking at the event, the Head of Training, ITF Akure Area Office, Mrs. Grace Ajagbe, described SIWES as a Federal Government initiative designed to complement classroom instruction with practical industrial experience in tertiary institutions.
She advised students to remain teachable, committed, and proactive throughout the programme, urging them to promptly communicate any challenges encountered to their SIWES Directors. Mrs. Ajagbe also disclosed that the previous batch of ABUAD SIWES students had received stipends, albeit modest, and commended the University for its consistent cooperation with the Fund.
She expressed appreciation to the Vice-Chancellor and the University management for the warm reception and strong institutional support extended to ITF officers and SIWES coordinators.
Earlier in his welcome address, the ABUAD SIWES Coordinator, Dr. Oluwaseun Ogungbemi, explained that the orientation programme was organised to acquaint eligible students with the objectives, expectations, and benefits of SIWES, enabling them to fully maximise the opportunity.
The programme later progressed into technical sessions coordinated by ITF officials in collaboration with college SIWES coordinators, during which students were guided on procedures, expectations, and best practices for a successful industrial training experience.
