On this day, the International Day of Education, we are reminded of the immense power of education – a power that transcends boundaries and shapes the very soul of humanity.
January 24th, each year, is a day to reflect on how “life” itself is enriched by the values instilled by dedicated teachers who see education not just as a profession, but as “a calling.”
I am immensely proud that at Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD), we nurture and champion quality education. This commitment is evident in the remarkable students we have produced over the years, making us a source of pride and admiration for other universities in Nigeria and beyond.
Taking a cue from our Founder, and Chancellor of ABUAD- Aare Afe Emmanuel Babalola, SAN, “education is the most effective weapon against ignorance, disease and poverty”.
As we celebrate this day, let’s be reminded that each of us—whether as educators, researchers, or students—play a pivotal role in creating pathways to opportunity and success. But we must also remember those millions of individuals around the world who still face barriers to education.
As we commemorate this important occasion, let us not only celebrate the progress we have made but also rededicate ourselves to the work that lies ahead. Together, we can contribute to a world where education is not only a universal right, a foundation for dignity, freedom, prosperity but also an achievable dream.
This year’s theme, “AI and education: Preserving human agency in a world of automation,” invites us to reflect on how education empowers us to understand, navigate, and influence the rapid pace of technological advancement. It calls on us to remain mindful of the responsibility we share—as learners, educators, and leaders—to ensure that our legacy in education remains a beacon of hope, opportunity, and equity for all.
In the face of rapidly rising artificial intelligence and automation, this theme serves as a timely call to action. It challenges us to think critically about how we can harness the potential of these innovations to unlock even greater possibilities for our future without inflicting harm on humanity that could be ushered in by AI.
As the Vice-President, National Association of Artificial Intelligence (AI) Practitioners, I am bold to say that ABUAD remains deeply committed to fostering an environment where learning thrives, diversity is celebrated, and where every individual’s aspirations are encouraged. Through our collective efforts, we strive to uphold the principles of academic excellence and equal access, ensuring that every member of our community is equipped with the tools to shape a brighter and more inclusive future through magic wand of education.
